I spent a very enjoyable morning with Carson and his family last week while taking his newborn portraits. I haven’t come across too many newborns smaller than my own but at 6lbs 2oz Carson is most definitely on the small end of things. Of course it’s hard to tell how tiny he is since he’s got such chubby cheeks and is nicely filled out, in fact I’d say he’s just perfect! He was happily awake when I started but drifted off to sleep pretty quickly. As much as I love the sleepy posed shots I kind of like taking a few awake and alert images too. Carson was a pro at posing for me, though he flat out refused to put his head on his hands which isn’t too big of a deal. I never force a pose but will try it a few times and if I can’t get the baby to settle in to it I skip it. Not every baby is comfortable in every pose and that’s ok, it’s not worth stressing the baby out by trying to force them into a pose that makes them uncomfortable.
I’m glad we were able to sneak outside for a quick outdoor shot. It’s the tail end of the season for an outdoors newborn pose, but we made it work by having everything ready to go and arranging it so that Carson was never in direct sunshine and was outside for a grand total of about four minutes. I’d really love to get outdoors with more newborns next summer when the weather is hot and better suited for bringing a newborn outdoors comfortably. So many possibilities!
